Refurbishment of the existing Biological Sciences facilities within the central campus laboratory building.

The mechanical services involved the installation of a new general gas supply and extract, toilet extract, fume cupboard extract and microbiological and fumigation exhaust systems. Heating and cooling were provided to all areas through ceiling concealed or high level wall mounted fan coil units. The heating system, fed from a new plate heat exchanger, connected to the existing main steam pipework to supply LTHW to the fan coils and the cooling system from the existing chiller plant.

The laboratories are supplied with compressed air, vacuum and gas pipework systems, while hot and cold water services were provided throughout to toilet areas, laboratories and various items of specialist equipment.

All of the heating, cooling and ventilation systems are controlled via a building management system, consisting of networked intelligent controllers compatible with the other Trend controls systems in the campus.

The electrical services involved the installation of new mains rising busbars, providing low-voltage power throughout. Power and data cables are installed through the ceiling void, with surface mounted three-compartment trunking in each room.

Lighting and emergency lighting is installed in accordance with CIBSE guidelines, using ceiling mounted recessed and surface mounted luminaires. The lighting systems are controlled via manual switching and passive infrared detectors.

A fully addressable fire alarm system has been linked to the existing university system compliant with BS5839.
